This module is to enable me to develop a clearer focus to learning new essential skills in self- management and motivation. It will provide a structured and supported environment in which   I will be given the opportunity to take control of my personal motivation and to gain confidence within myself.

week 1:  26,09,20011

This was an introduction to blogger, flickr and 4000 aperture.
We created our blogs and registered on to flickr and made a link from my blog to flickr

Flickr - is an image hosting and video website, web service and online community
Blogger - is created by Google, blogs is short for web-logs or online journal.

Week 2:  3.09,2011

This week I was updating my blog and learning more about editing .We  were also told how to up -date our blog  using the  list below:

. What style of language to use.

. How to ensure it appears professional.

.  Add class notes.

. How to reference

. To give feedback on other class bloggers.

. To look at other bloggers so I can develop ideas.

Our requirements today were to keep our blogs up-dated and to use appropriate language as our blogs will be seen by other students. We have to be more aware of the photography industry and use this to back up our own work. For example.

Association of Photographers.

British Journal of Photography.

Royal Photographic Society.

We also have to start our blog posts by setting three short term and three long term targets. These aims are not set in stone and may change as we learn more about the industry.

short term aims:

:  to research more about the functions of the camera.

:  to research more on different types of lighting and practise using them.

:  to use a mac computer and how to use lightroom.

long term aims.

: to buy camera to suit my type of photography.

: to combine a more professional protocol when I'm interviewing for the magazine I work for.

: to put on an exhibition of my own work.

 Dark Matters

                                                               Me at Dark Matters.

Our task set by Martin  was to research in our own time, the Daniel Rozin exhibition.
This exhibition is a combination of shadow , technology and art.The display of works from the Whitworth's collection reveals ideas surrounding shadow as captured in a variety of medium.
On the 14 of October me and my eldest son ,who is studying  at Salford University, went to the  Dark Matters exhibition. We got a taxi  from Salford University which cost £10 to get there, but it was free entry. My favourite artist within the the exhibition was Daniel Rozin .On return  to the Manchester Victoria train station we got a bus back only costing £1.60.

Daniel Rozin's work:
'With Snow Mirror' (2006), this was an image of ourselves,  transformed by  the digital magic of computer programming. The image was projected onto a suspended fabric, a likeness  of ourselves  appeared at a slow pace and dreamlike.

'Peg Mirror' (2007), this was my favourite piece of the two, this consisted of 650 circular wooden pieces that tilt and rotate to cast an array of shadow. The quietly moving wooden pegs flicker like jewels or coins .

WEEK: 3    12,10, 2012

This week's task  is to consider the practice of a contemporary professional photographer in terms of the trajectory of their career. Martyn gave the class a list of photographers to research.

WEEK :4   18, 10 2012

Case study: 1
                                                       photojournalistJane Bown.

I have chosen Jane Bown the photographer, she was born in 1925 in Dorset. Jane studied photography at the Guild College. Her big break came in 1949  at the age of  24 when she was asked by Mechthild Nawiasky from the Observer to take a picture of the philosopher Bertrand Russell.

She worked in black and white only using natural or available light, with a forty year old camera which was a Rollifex. She then  went on to use  an Olympus set on her favourite setting  '1/60th and  f 2.8 . Jane's clients to name but a few were- Orson Welles, Woody Allen, CillaDors

Jane's exhibitions included  -'The  Gentle Eye' (London National Gallery 1980-81), 'Rock'  (1963-2003) , Unknown Bown (1947-67) and 'Guardian Newsroom  '(2007).  In 2007 her work on Greeham Common evictions was selected as part of ' How we are: photographing Britain' this was the first major survey of photography to be held at the Tate Britain.

Jane Bown is the longest serving photojournalist  and portrait photographer for the Observer .She still is working today. Her definitive collection is in her latest new book' Exposures' which was shown in an exhibition in Kings Place 2009-10. Jane now lives in a house previously owned by the novelist  Jane Austin's bother. In 1985 she was awarded an MBE  and in 1995 she was 'upgraded' to the CBE.

The reason why I chose Jane Bown is because she used simple technology and got wonderful results. She had a great understanding of light and shadow  and the ability  to draw out people's emotions  by focusing on their eyes.   Quote from Jane Bown "The last time I changed my camera was 50 years ago. All I need is a good face and the right light ."

Luke Dodd, Director of the Newsroom, said: “Jane can take a photograph, change a lens or reload a camera with the dexterity of a card shark. Accompanying her to the Glastonbury festival in 2003, I was able to witness the simple but very effective way she takes photographs. Working in black and white without lights, props or tripods she never uses a light meter but gauges the settings by looking at how the light falls on the back of her hand.”

These pictures below are a small selection of Jane Bown images. Please use the links to view more of her images.

week  : 8      Case study : 3  Is a wedding and portraits photographer: Paul Brown.

The Photographer

           Paul Brown: Photographer.

This week we were asked to do a  case  study  on  an established photographer. I decided to contact a Blackburn  local photographer  by surfing the net. This is where I found wedding and portrait photographer Paul Brown.

Paul Brown Photography is a wedding, portrait and commercial photographer based in  Lancashire covering Blackburn, Lancashire and the Northwest. Paul can adapt his style to suit the client whether it is traditional, contemporary or reportage. Paul Brown is an award winning Lancashire wedding photographer with 25 award winning photos and 'Travel of the Year Shot 2010' firmly under his belt.. Paul believes that customer care skills play a vital role in his business. Paul stated that it is paramount that your organisation  and forward planning should be at the forefront of any professional business. He said" forward planning  with each individual client and tailor making their special day is the key to success" .

Quote: from Paul Brown
"Well here is a little bit about me. I was born in 1969 in Suffolk and was brought up in Suffolk until I left School in 1986. From there I joined the Royal Air Force as an Airframe Engineer. I was based in Norfolk for 16 years where I travelled to many countries with my job. From January 2004 until December 2009, I was posted to Moray in the North of Scotland. This where my love of photography escalated. Starting with landscape and general photography, I was to discover I had a real love of taking pictures of people especially weddings. The interaction with people of all ages was a breath of fresh air to me. This helped me to make the decision to leave the RAF after 22 years, relocate to be with my partner in Blackburn and spend more time on my passion of photography. Now with the support of Janet and many people in the industry I am striving to continually improve and put a smile on all the faces I ever work with.

SWPP:  Phil Jones presented Travel Award of the Year to Paul Brown.

The judges comments about the image were as follows. 'Interesting and intriguing image of the man, cat robe and bike. A lot to see and gives the feeling that you want to know more'.

This  picture won Paul Brown Travel Shot of  the year, 2010.

These are some questions I asked Paul Brown.

Question 1 :How long have you been doing photography ?
Answer : I got my first camera when I was 34, but started working professionally since 2005 when I left the RAF.

Question 2: Have you won any competitions ?
Answer :  I am current Travel Photographer of the Year http://www.swpp.co.uk/ I am qualified to Licentiate with SWPP in Weddings.  I have also won 25 Gold Awards with these too. http://paulbrown-lancashire.blogspot.com/2011/02/travel-photographer-of-year-award.html

Question 3: What education or training did you undertake?
Answer:  I haven't got any formal qualifications , I'm self taught . When I first started out I really didn't have a clue about photography, so I joined a few photographer clubs and this is where  I have made life long friends and mentors.

Question 4 :Who do you work for?
Answer:    This is who he works for in Yorkshire  -   http://www.markpearsonphotography.co.uk/index.php

Question 5 : How do you advertise your business?
Answer: My web site and  Mark Pearson are vital links to the public.  Word of mouth is very inportant and we also network when we are doing weddings.

Question 7:  Have there been any photographers that have inspired you over the years of your career?
Answer:   Favourite photographers-are Jerry Ghionis, Jeff Ascough, Crash Taylor are just 3.

Question  8:What sort of clients do you have?
Answer:  They are mainly wedding clients but we are starting to get editorial  work and commission work.

Question 9: Have you had any exhibitions of your work or have you published a book?
Answer : None at the moment, but I am thinking of publishing a book in the future.

Question  10: How does your work  effect your private life?
Answer  :   (long pause) it does have an impact . From March till October  is were I make my money but I never have any time off at the weekends or much during the week. I have a very understanding girlfriend, in fact she was surfing the net looking at photographer sites when she came across mine and she was so impressed with my work she rang me up and told me how amazing they were, after that we went out on a date and the rest is history. (wont great story) !

Question 11:  When you are doing any wedding photography what iso, or  f ,stops do you use?
Answer : It all depends on the location, I always keep my white Balance on cloudy and shoot on raw so we can adjust the pictures later. This is because all churches and hotels  don't like us using flash. We also check out the location 4 weeks before the event  so we have an idea what sort of equipment to take. Prior checks are paramount before an event.

Question 12: If you had a chance of having your ideal job what would it be?
Answer: I would like to be a footballer for Ipswich.

Question 13  Are there any funny stories or gossip you can tell me?
Answer: Not really , but I do have to carry around sewing kits, and duck tape, because when the bride gets drink lots of things start to hang out or get torn.

These pictures below were shot on a Nikon D60 in the studio with copy lighting  (soft box) . I really struggled to get the aperture and ISO  right ,so they all ended up looking out of focus ,over exposed and flat . I  have learnt now that I should take a light meter when I am doing studio work , to use  auto flash linked from the camera to the light and to check the settings for example the white balance.

F7.1 ,ISO: 100 Exposure,1/100, A/P

                                                      F 3.5  , ISO:100 ,Exposure 1/100   ,A/P

                                                 F: 5.6   -ISO 200 exposure 1/13,  A/P

These pictures below where taken the day after I took the picture above. I was really pleased with  the results . This is because Andy showed me which lights to use for example  45/45 constant lighting and soft box with automate flash.I also used a meter reader  and my camera was set to Raw ,I also  check the white balance.

                                            REFLECTIVE  ESSAY

The skill I chose to develop was my organisational skills. After starting my access course it became quite apparent in the early stages that I might struggle. For example; research and writing up of essays and other commitments such as my four teenagers. They totally relay on me for transporting them to and from their schools and after school activities.
I genuinely cannot put in to words how much I am enjoying the course.  I wish that I had gone back into education years ago. In devising an action plan I have looked at potential situations which could have a negative effect on the task in hand, therefore managing and balancing my time effectively and limiting stress. I felt that an action plan was needed; this would be a foundation in which to start an essay.
The changes I had to make in my attitude to organising my time were basically to explain to my family and make it clear  that I had to make a realist plan to fit in my study time and family commitments  and actually stick to a plan. By doing this it makes me feel a lot more positive and focused on the essay set in sociology. It created a situation where when I sat down to research and write up my essay I felt relaxed and more able to concentrate.
Not having a huge amount of knowledge and experience in writing essays and the thought of half term break, did put quite a bit of pressure on me. Creating an action plan did provide me with a positive attitude from the start.
What I wanted to achieve was to complete the essay with as little stress as possible, complete a draft copy and hand it in on the first week in November and to receive feedback on my work. Having devised an action plan, I gave myself the time needed to complete my research prior to writing up the essay. This gave me the chance to look for good quality information.
I feel it enabled me to construct a good essay which managed to identify the appropriate terms and concepts relevant to the subject. I tackled the questions with the time and space needed for a subject I was new at. The action plan enabled me to complete the essay with very little distractions. I managed to hand in my essay on time but when I received my feedback I was advised to get some help with my grammar which would improve my future essays. I was surprised a little, because no one ever had taken an interest in my grammar. The next step was to see a support worker where we could work together  to improve my issues  that I was having Therefore an action plan was put into place. After a few sessions I felt more confident that   I could achieve a better standard in my future essays.
I was made aware when writing my essays that if I didn’t understand the question, I would over compensate by writing more then I should have done.  I now draw a spider graph which helps me to identify exactly what to cover in my assignments. I honestly know that it will take time to improve my issues with grammar. But because I have been given the tools to achieve a higher stand of work this will encourage me to keep on slowly improving.
As stated I feel  more confided  now than I did  before , I wish that I had asked for help  a long time before , but I was too proud to ask . I will in future ask for help so I can achieve my goals and overcome issues that arise when writing essays or projects.
